Week 1
Statistics of Internet Usage within the UK from 2006-2008
As is always the case, the number of UK households using the internet is constantly on the rise, and the years 2006, 2007 and 2008 were certainly no exception. Currently, over 18 million households in the UK have access to the internet. In 2006, there were only around 14 million households with internet access. That’s an increase of 28%, or roughly 1 million per year. Unfortunately, prior to 2006, estimates of internet users in the UK were not recorded.

Below, is a map showing the area of the UK with broadband access in late 2005, and the same in late 2008. This shows that UK broadband is on the increase. However, it is easy to see that the South East of England, along with the Eastern Scotland, are the most developed areas of broadband.

This diagram is backed up by statistics, as London in 2008 had the highest level of broadband access, with over 80% of London’s population using broadband internet.
